Society News
Thank you all who came to our last outing of the year at Woldingham. A great day out with perfect weather for golf so late in the year.
The winner of the day with 40 points was Steve Bentley and the runner up with 38 points on countback was Michael Jemma. Well done to you both.
It's been a difiicult year but even without being able to play any competitions it has been good to see everyone on various meetings at the courses we played this year. After Boris's announcement last night it is not prudenet for me to make any advance bookings yet for next year but I'll keep you all updated when the climate for this gets better.
One booking I am provisionally making is the away weekend 2021 and I'm in contact with the hotel in Wales to rearrange dates for September 2021. More news to follow on this.
The only deadline for you all is subs for next year of £25 each by the end of November please. My plan is to get at least one or two courses booked in March and April 2021. I have been in contact with the Altonwood Group (The Addington, Westerham, Surrey National and Woldingham) and they will be able to sort something out on reasonably short notice if required.
It's also another milestone for the IGS this being 20 years of existence. It's such a shame other events have stopped this from being as good a year as previous years but we won't be beaten and I have no doubt when the situation gets better we will be back better and stronger than ever with proper golf days. So keep safe and keep practicing. Have a great Christmas and New Year (if Boris lets us) and see you all next season.
We won't be applying the IGS handicap cuts for 1st and 2nd place given the truncted season, but handicap cuts will roughly be in line with CONGU rules, buffer zones will be kept and cuts applied dependent on SSS of the course as the case may be.
However it will be a very different sort of Society day as we must all continue to comply with social distancing rules during the day. There are three aspects to this: 1. What the courses expect of you; 2. What the IGS expects of its members; and 3. your own personal responsibility to comply with social distancing and the rules of the day. Taking each point in order:
1. Here is a link to give you a flavour of what is expected of you by clubs that we will be visitng:
2. Here is what the IGS expects of its members on the day.
If you have symptoms do not turn up under any circumstances. Just text/call me even if it is on short notice. Follow the government advice.
Obey the course rules for Social Distancing and the general law. Marshals will be checking and if you are seen not to be complying you'll be asked to leave by the course management. I'll review what the course management's reason is for ejecting a member and if valid then you are likely never to be invited to play in the Society again.
If another member tells me about similar issues about another member on the day regarding the above, and it is substantiated, then you are likely never to be asked to play for the Society again.
Turn up on time. Don't expect a refund if you are late for your tee time.
Don't share cars, equipment or anything else. Please obtain your own score card on the day and fill it in properly at the start. Follow THIS LINK to see how it should be completed before you play. Don't swap cards but make sure you record your playing partner's score on your card. Sign cards at the end but don't use the same pen or pencil and don't touch the other card. Put it in the bag/box I will have.
3. Your personal responsibility.
You have a duty to your fellow players, and the course staff, to uphold the distancing measures and keep yourself and your fellow members safe. If any of you don't intend to socially distance, observe the rules, both IGS and course rules, with regard to social distancing then please do yourselves a favour and don't turn up. It will be safer for the rest of us who want to do the right thing by everybody. Future outings will unfortunately be the last if members do not adhere to all the rules. It is a test of us all as individuals, not just the IGS.
From the above you can see I have done quite a thorough risk assessment using current guidence and if a member doesn't follow the rules then the IGS can take no responsibility if that member does not follow the rules.
If you have kept up so far well done. I do not want to put a doom and gloom on any day before we get there and it is a learning curve in having to do things differently. The way we all interact has now changed and we all have to adapt to it if the Society is able to continue safely. But with everyone's cooperation I am sure the day will be a success and we can develop how we deal with society days in the future as to their format whilst restrictions remain in place.
Please come as prepared and as informed (call the club if necessary, not me) as you can before you play and give yourselves enough time to prepare your score card as well. Get a feel of the likely golf rule changes from the links above for play on the day.
And finally: there will be no longest drive, no nearest the pin, no fines and no competitions in their current format.
We're not going to let this nasty virus beat us, but we will beat it by doing things safely when we are playing golf and how we conduct ourselves. See you all next Sunday and keep safe.
For future Society days I will keep reviewing matters on a month by month basis so next deadline updated above but I'll be in contact with you all before the relevant dates if it is evident we will not be playing. This includes the away weekend. Please all keep safe.
FURTHER DEADLINES
The deadlines will be strictly adhered to and you are reminded if you have not either sent me a text or an email confirming you have paid and for which fixture I will assume you are not going. Therefore, it is in your interests to keep me informed about your payments.
Please do not forget to inform me when you have made a payment and what it is for. Courses generally have particular contractual requirements for payment and provision of final numbers.

Master Scoreboard
I have now added a link to the index page to this particularly useful stats based utility that publishses all our results from every scorecard entered in an easy to read format. Just type in the first few letters of the society in the front page, select us, then text or Whatsapp me for the password. Hopefully the utility navigation is self-explanatory but you will see every competiotion, scorecard and other useful items for your reading pleasure. Enjoy.
2021 Matchplay competition
The committee has decided to continue
the variation of the competition by letting the first round be played over
the March and April fixtures for next year alone. The final can now only
be played over the last two fixtures. If you can make the March fixture
and not the April fixture (or vice versa) and your opponent is in a similar
position so that you do not actually play your opponent on the day, then
the person with the best stableford score will go through to the second
round. If tied, it will be decided on back nine countbacks, then if still
tied front nine countbacks and if still tied, on a coin toss. If you make
neither the March or April fixture then you are out. All other rounds stay
the same. If you do not attend the second round (May) onwards, then you
are out. If you have played your opponent on the March fixture, you cannot
play your second round at the April fixture. All first round matches must
be played before the second round can begin. All other rules stay the same.
This format unfortunately does not encourage society attendance; however
it does reduce the number of byes going into the hat at each round. These
are the two competing interests and the committee is investigating all options
in this matter.
Please always remember that your opinion, if forwarded, will always be discussed at committee meetings even if you cannot attend. Please contact a member of the committee or myself. It is best not to have discussions on society days, as these are busy days in terms of organisation and I am unable to give the time I and the committee would like to such discussions, whereas we are more than happy to do so on any other days.
Deadlines
Can all members who run an excess cash balance with the society please also contact me before, but near to, the deadline to confirm that they will be at the next fixture. Advance payment is always welcome and catered for, but I shall always assume that people are not going unless they advise me accordingly by the deadline. Even if you pay months in advance for society days, individual circumstances can and do change nearer the deadline. I'm also not a mind reader.
